Deep Technical Audit

P2P Message Protocol + Peer Handshake

This audit maps the VTA peer connection lifecycle: version negotiation, protocol-version recording, verack transition, message framing, checksum validation, peer-version compatibility, and malformed-message handling. The verified local-node values are recorded separately from source-level findings.

Observed Protocol

LOCAL NODE VERIFIED

The benchmark's VTA Core node reported protocol version 70002.

Version / Verack

SOURCE PATH VERIFIED

The legacy Bitcoin-derived networking architecture uses a version message followed by a verack transition and negotiated receive/send protocol version.

Message Integrity

SOURCE PATH VERIFIED

The message header contains network magic, command, payload size and checksum; malformed headers/checksums are rejected by the inspected transport path.

Handshake Flow

TCP / Peerconnection established versionprotocol + services Compatibility Gateminimum / negotiated version verackactivate receive version P2P Messagesframed + checked Message header integrity network magic → command/type → payload size → checksum Oversized payloads, invalid framing, wrong checksum and invalid message types are rejected by the inspected transport path. Audit boundary Exact historical VTA minimum-peer-version and every message command require release/tag-specific source tracing.

Audit Matrix

AreaFindingStatus
Protocol versionLocal VTA Core reported protocol version 70002.Verified local observation
Version messageLegacy Bitcoin-derived VTA networking follows the standard version-message handshake architecture used by the project lineage.Source architecture
Version compatibilityPeers exchange a protocol version and the connection uses a negotiated/minimum version for serialization.Source path
Verack transitionThe handshake transitions receive-version handling after verack in the inspected legacy architecture.Source architecture
Network magicMessage framing checks the expected network start bytes before accepting the message payload.Verified transport behavior
Payload sizeTransport rejects messages exceeding configured protocol limits before processing payload data.Verified transport behavior
ChecksumPayload hash/checksum is compared against the header checksum and a mismatch causes rejection.Verified transport behavior
Invalid message typeInvalid message types are rejected by the inspected message parser.Verified transport behavior
Duplicate version handlingExact duplicate-version behavior needs release-specific tracing in the VTA tree before being claimed as current. Not fully release-pinned
Current peer-version censusThe benchmark has observed local peer connections but does not claim a network-wide version census. Not measured

Security / Reliability Relevance

Framing

Size and header validation reduces malformed-message exposure before higher-level processing.

Compatibility

Version negotiation is a protocol-layer mechanism; it does not automatically prove consensus-rule compatibility.

Network evidence

A local node's protocol version is an observation, not a census of the live network.

Interpretation rule: This page deliberately separates source-level protocol mechanics from current network measurements and from historical release behavior. No network-wide compatibility or security score is assigned.
